Information about FRANKFURT Frankfurt is a industrial metropolis, and Germany's fifth-largest city. Frankfurt, city of intellect, is home to apple wine, small-town friendliness, green spaces and 180 nationalities. Frankfurt is a city of contrasts and variety, with a mix of the modern and traditional, the urban and the rustic: Frankfurt's high-rise buildings soar up to the sky from the city centre. Having been controversial for a long time, today this skyline is regarded as symbolic of the city's dynamism, Frankfurt is also the headquarters of the European Central Bank and the home of the Bundesbank, Germany's central bank. Frankfurt is also the country's financial centre. It's been a major banking city ever since the Rothschilds opened their first bank here in 1798. Frankfurt also has a leading stock exchange.The most important events are international trade fairs in spring and autumn which bring some 1.5 million visitors to the city and its Messe Frankfurt (fairgrounds). Fairs include the Motor Show, the Textile Fair, the Chemical Industries Fair, and the Cookery Fair. But the best known is the International Book Fair, which draws some 5,500 publishers from nearly 100 countries, and is the most important meeting place in the world for the acquisition and sale of book rights and translations. Frankfurt’s most famous son is Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.Although Frankfurt doesn't have the monuments or museums to equal Munich or Berlin, its museums and exhibition halls still lure some 2 million visitors annually. Many of the grandest museums lie along the Main on the south bank. Frankfurt has a lot of parks. A botanic city ring has replaced the enclosing city walls of old Frankfurt. Along the Main is a park landscape where you'll see bankers taking their lunch break beneath statues of heroes from the past. Some of the most popular parks are: the Palmengarten; the Tropicarium which is a complex for tropical vegetation; and the Bethmann Park, with its Chinese gardens.Frankfurt has a huge international airport and a massive 19th Century railway station, which is the busiest in Europe. Frankfurt is also a heavily industrial city, with more than 2,450 factories operating around the ford (Furt) on the Main River.
